CTDL 153: To boldly go…

As if there was a chance I wouldn’t make that joke (the one in the headline, the one that isn’t funny). Hawking is calling for NASA to follow the Columbus spirit and spread disease and mayhem… err… explore and discover other options for when humanity messes up this planet.

In a speech honouring Nasa’s 50th anniversary, the 66-year-old astrophysicist said the situation we face “is like Europe before 1492″.
“People might well have argued it was a waste of money to send Columbus on a wild goose chase,” he mused.
“Yet the discovery of the new world made profound difference to the old.”
And then he quipped: “Just think, we would not have a Big Mac or KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken).
“Spreading out into space will have an even greater effect,” he told an audience assembled at George Washington University, Washington DC.
“It will completely change the future of the human race and maybe determine whether we have any future at all.”

Maybe Hawkings, the genius, has the right opinion on this one because if humans continue killing each other and this planet, we won’t have a future here on Earth.

Thanks for the comment Matt. I agree with Hawkings actually, though I’m not sure how much good we’ll do for ourselves. I think it’s something we should try to do. I’m just being a bit cynical about our species’ propensity toward harming ourselves and our environment be it here or elsewhere. Hopefully the elsewhere option will allow us long enough to learn how to not screw up as much.
